Never Make The First or Third Out At Third Base

samflamont:

This is something you hear a lot in baseball but I rarely hear coaches explain why?  I think youth coaches forget their players don’t understand the game like they do.  I know I am guilty of this from time to time.

So why do we not make the first out at third?

If you are on second base with nobody out your team has a lot of options.  Your coach can choose to bunt you over, or if a lefty is up or a guy who can control the bat he may let him try to hit behind you (ground ball to the right side) or he may let the guys just hit figuring you should be able to score a guy from second with nobody out.  So unless you are for sure going to be safe do not try and take third base with nobody out.

Why do we not make the third out at third?

With two outs you are running on contact so you should easily score from second on a hit.  You do not have to make sure a ground ball (to the left side) or a line drive get through.  Also, being on third base is great with less than two outs because a sacrifice fly will score you but with two outs that possibility is gone, so again you are better off just staying at second, if you are not going to be able to stand up going into third.
