You have seen the excitement on a kids face when he gets his brand new baseball glove, it is awesome. Then comes the tedious job of breaking it in. I have witnessed numerous methods of people breaking in new gloves and there is only one that I like.
What Not To Do:
put a ball in your glove and put it under your mattress.
put a basebball in your glove and tie a belt around it (or any other object around it). Also, do not use a softball.
oil it to soften the leather and break it in quicker (actually makes the glove heavy).
put shaving cream in your glove and put it in the microwave (it has been done).
use any tool to break in your glove.
What I want you to do and why
All the above ways of breaking in your glove will actually cause your glove to break down quicker. If you want to break your glove in, put in on your hand and play catch. Yes, it is that easy, use the glove as you would in a game to break it in. Doing this ensures you break the glove in properly and in a way that your pocket will form correctly. If you break your glove in by using it, you get the results you want, a glove that is game ready, and fits your hand like it should.
When to use glove oil
Glove oil is a conditioner, it should be use lightly (very lightly) as the leather gets wear and tear. Do not oil your entire glove inside and out, just use a little bit on the palm area since that is the most used are on the glove. Over using glove oil will make you glove heavy and soft, and I have actually seen kids have their gloves turn really soft and over flexible due to them over using oil to break their glove in.
So to break your glove in just do what you love to do, Play Ball.
