Priority On Fly Balls And How To Call It

samflamont:

Communication on fly balls is extremely important.  A fly ball should be caught so make sure you know who has priority over who.

On a fly ball in the infield the shortstop has priority on any ball he can get, unless someone is camped under it, you can take it.

Second base has priority over first base and pitcher on fly balls to the right side of the infield.  Third base has priority over pitcher and catcher and so does the first baseman.  In the outfield Center field has priority over everyone.

Outfielders have priority over infielders on balls that the infielder is going back on.  The reason being is it is easier to catch a ball running in on it rather then going back on it.

On a pop up behind third base in the outfield grass, the shortstop and the third baseman should go back on it.  The left fielder should be coming in on it as well.  If the shortstop can get to it and get under it he should call it and make the catch.  If he has to run hard after it then he should go after it until he hears the outfielder call it, if the outfielder calls it make sure you clear out of the way so he is comfortable knowing he will not collide with anyone.

If there is a pop up in foul territory between first base and home plate both the catcher and first baseman should converge on this ball.  If the first baseman can get to it even if the catcher is under it he should call it.  Why call the catcher off?  Because the first baseman’s glove is easier to catch a flay ball with, and the ball due to the back spin is moving away from the catcher an into the first baseman making it an easier catch.  The first baseman should take charge and call the ball a minimum of three times and extremely loud, you do not want a collision.

On any ball in the air make sure you call it and call it properly.  I always tell my players to call it three times loud.  Say, I got it, I got it, I got it.  Do not say mine or ball.  The more you say and the louder you call it the better chance your teammates hear you.

Take charge use two hands and make the catch, do not get cute.  We want outs, secure the ball with two hands.  Have fun, play hard, and do not let the pitcher catch the ball…Ever :)
