Before you read this be sure you know this play is illegal. It will not get you thrown out but if you get caught your runner will surely be out. If you do not get caught you will score two runs with the ball never leaving the infield. Also, if it does not work out you are going to get doubled off. This play has high risk/reward and should not be used by the faint of heart. There are slight variations of it depending on the level of play, but this particular play only works with a two man umpire crew due to their positioning.
What you need is a runner on 2nd and 3rd. As a coach you are going to put a squeeze play on. This works like a normal squeeze for the most part except the runner on second starts to steal third base and when the ball is bunted he cuts the corner about 20 feet short and heads toward the third base foul line on a diagonal angle in order to get to the line and then come home and score. Your runner on second wants cut roughly 20 feet in front of the bag and hit the foul line about 25-30 feet in front of the bag. In order to make sure you have the home plate umpires eyes off the play make sure the ball is bunted toward first base.
Why it works:
With all the commotion a squeeze brings to players it usually does the same for umps. The field ump will be looking for the ball a, and the throw to first so he will not see the runner behind him. The home plate umpire who should have a clean view of the play is caught up in the action as well. He will usually look toward the pitcher going to field the ball and will also be looking at home plate in case of a play at the plate. Since a well executed squeeze play never ends up with a play at the plate the pitcher will field it and throw it to first and your runner from second will be known as the fastest man alive as he crosses home plate. This play cannot be appealed because nobody saw it, if they did you will already be out. It will cause hysteria from opposing fans and coaches if they saw what happened but there is nothing they can do about it. Rest assured everyone including the umps will know something weird just happened but nothing can be done. The score keeper will put two runs on the board and your next batter will hit.
Remember this play has very high risk/reward so it should only be done in a time of dire straights (down by one, last inning one out and your 9 hole hitter being up counts as dire straights). Give it a shot, if it works you score and get a good laugh, if it doesn’t at least you get a good laugh. Either way you get a laugh and what is better than that.
Let me know of any trick plays you have seen or heard, I am curious to what other people have tried.
